Install X11 on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger without the install DVD

The other day I was at school and I needed to install X11 on my intel mac in order to run an NX Client session into my linux box at home.

However, apple doesn’t seem to want to put the X11 User package for Tiger online anywhere… You can find the package for <=10.3 but what good is that!?

For anyone like me who doesn’t carry their Tiger install DVD at all times, I am going to put the X11 User and X11 SDK packages online.

The .zip file contains 2 packages, X11User.pkg and X11SDK.pkg. I think you need to install the X11SDK.pkg first, however if you have the dev tools installed it’s probably already there. After the install run software update as apple has released an update for this version of X11.

Enjoy X11.

Note: There has been some question as to whether or not I am allowed to host and distribute this binary copy of X11 from Apple. In looking at the XFree86 license, I believe I am freely able to redistribute this file as specified in this section: “Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the “Software”), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicence, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:”

I download the package, unzip, then install the 'X11User.pkg' everything works. Then I attemp tp install the 'X11SDK.pkg'. At the 'Installation Type' step I click on 'Install' but a message pops up that says "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install."
I've trying installing and running through both firefox and safari. Any other options I can work through?

Thanks for making X11 for 10.4 available! I recently bought a refurbished G5. Great price! That's the good news. Bad news includes that it came with OSX 10.4 and no DVDs, and my faithful old copy of Photoshop 6 was not going to run on my new G5. I won't bore you with the hassles I've had with Adobe, trying to get Elements happening properly. For now, it looks like Gimp may be the answer. But it wouldn't have been, without your help! Sorry to see that the Amazon link no longer seems to work.

I needed x11 in order for OpenOffice to work. Who knew that x11 is an install option on the install disk? Not me!, and unfortunately I lost my disk during one of my moves from California to Italy to Israel.

Chris that was a great help. I use to get this Posix13 error message when I tried to install mac updates and couldn't load Gmail or Utube because of the same error. Something to do with a missing installer. I couldn't load x11 from the Mac site for the same error. But you have saved the day. So now I am not blocked! You're a champ! :-)

Hey there - yes I got Gimp to work after installing X11 from here. All good! the other issue I had was actually my web protection software blocking cookies - when it detected a site like Youtube seeking an email address it alerted me to a hack and I was blocking them. All fixed now. Cheers, S

Thank you for making this available online. I've moved so many times that I have no idea where my CD is--in one of the unpacked boxes, but which one?

One thing which you might consider adding to your instructions is how to install it. I'm more of a *nix person, so I untarred the file and then looked around the directories for something to run make on. It took a few minutes before I started up the finder and realized I was able to click on the .pkg to install it! Kind of stupid of me, but quite possible if you're more familiar with the command-line than with macs.

You are fantastic. Thank you for doing what I would have done if I had a working setup. I'm trying to NX into my box at home. I am on vacation and don't have the *second* osx disc with me. I forgot it by accident. This has been a GREAT help. I was so frustrated when I realized that Apple was clutching yet another piece of their domain as though some Windows dev might get their greasy hands on it. I still cannot fathom the pretentiousness of Apple, Inc. Anybody listening, just try dual booting windows and linux on apple firmware. When you've finished, tell me how you did it. I've been on linux for 4 years now and I cannot figure it out.

I mean, you start from Step 1 (allegedly) only to find you have to do a tremendous amount of downloading and other prequel work in order to even *get* to where you can begin with Step 1? You asked if this version would work with Panther. I don't think it will, but the version that apple does provide on their website should work with everything up to Tiger (including Panther).

I got the Tiger DVD and needed X11User.pkg but could only find the X11SDK.pkg on the damn DVD. I am sure it is on the freakin DVD somewhere but hey, aren´t Apple trying to profile their products as userfriendly?

Anyway, it was much quicker to google this post and download so I could start to use Inkshape which I desparately needed to vectoricize a .gif picture. I was really pressed for time and if possible I would like to send a small donation for your awesome initative of hosting X11.

Well I ran down the list and except for the guy out of the country, I think I'm the farthest from my Tiger disks of all. I go to college at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and am on a summer physics internship in Texas. I drove down, 1150 miles. Well you see my dad replaced my G4 Powerbook for me and didn't have X11 installed, and down here everyone uses MatLab and it's really convenient to have MatLab portable... THANKS SO MUCH. You're right about X... it's supposed to be free, but you're the only guy who has it for Tiger.

Sorry, the server where I was hosting the files at school GaTech!(figures) went down. However, someone else on the intarweb literally copied this entire post and will not respond to any of my attempts at asking them to credit me or at least alter their (completely ripped off) post.

I won't link to them here, but I am downloading their un-kindly mirrored file (they also provided a direct link to my file), and I will re-up it very shortly.

One question tho..did you guys successfully install the x11 from the downloaded files? It tells me to "insert the X11 Tiger CD".. Is there a CD for X11 or its saying insert the Tiger CD (that i left it at home and wont be able to get it until next month..)??

thanks heaps!!! I am traveling at the moment, and needed to install X11 on my macbook in order to give a demonstration. Like I would take the install CDs with me......Goddammit - X11 is an opensource project. It should be easy to download online. Apple should have a direct link to it on their web site. It would make everyone happier - with no extra cost to them - except a little bandwisth now and then....Thank you for the files!!!!!

I have my DVD but my Powerbook DVD ROM is not working ( I replaced the display and the DVD ROM is not perfectly back in place to eject the current disk out of the case). somehow my X11 got screwed up and I didn't want to have to open up the hardware at the moment. Why doesn't Apple just do what you have done. Again, thanks so much

So were any of you actually able to get this to install without encountering "you already have a newer version installed" messages? I can't seem to ever install a downloaded version of X11User.

How do I convince my machine that I don't have any X11 installed on it?

Great, I have the tigers cd but cannot find any X11 related package (except X11SDK which I don't really care about).
thank you very much, I still don't understand why it's so hard to find this package.
Is anybody else french ? did just apple forget to include X11 on the french cd ?
